Preservation Australia Workshops in Melbourne

After a break of several years, Preservation Australia is again offering conservation workshops in Melbourne. Due to the generous hosting of the RMIT Culture, we are able to run two  workshops in late April/May this year at the RMIT Design Archives. Both workshops are presented by Kay Söderlund, Director of Preservation Australia, which is based in Sydney. Kay is a professional conservator who has worked in the GLAM sector for nearly 40 years and specialises in Disaster Preparedness and preventive conservation. She works with all types of museums, from national institutions to community museums and has developed workshops covering a range of conservation subjects. These workshops have been presented all over Australia and SE Asia for many years – and are presented in a lively and engaging manner!

The Workshops

April 30th – Care of Collections

This workshop is one of the perennial favourites of our workshops. It is an excellent introduction into the world of preventive conservation for all those responsible for the care and management of collections. Preventive conservation is both a practical and economic approach to the preservation of collections. The full day workshop looks at the 10 agents of deterioration – their impact on collections and what can be done to mitigate that – along with Preservation Planning and appropriate storage and display materials.

May 1st – Disaster Combo

This full day workshop is a combination of Disaster Preparedness (planning) and Disaster Recovery (practical) and is a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of disaster preparedness. The first part of the day covers the components of a Disaster Preparedness Plan, and how to prepare the information required for an active and useful plan. During the second part of the day participants work through a practical Disaster Response scenario, based on recovery of a water impact on a mixed collection. The workshop is designed to provide participants with a very practical understanding of Disaster Preparedness and aims to provide an overview of what is involved in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

Booking Information

Both workshops are all day – 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. Cost is $350 (incl GST) per person, with a 10% discount if both workshops are booked. Spaces are limited to 20 people for both workshops. Workbooks will be provided. RMIT Design Archives is located at Building 100, 154 Victoria Street, Carlton VIC 3053

Kay Söderlund

We present fabulous workshops and it is one of the areas for which we are best known – probably because we love doing them. We run our in-house workshops in Sydney twice a year, and regularly deliver workshops on request throughout Australia and Asia – did we mention that we love to travel?

While we have a full range of standard workshops, we also prepare custom workshops on request designed specifically for the target organisation(s) or collection.

Both Kay and Tegan have qualifications in Assessment and Workplace Training, and in 1992 Kay completed one of the first training programmes to be offered in Preventive Conservation – at the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles.

Sydney workshops are held in our conservation studio at 2A Young Street, Annandale, 2038. The studio is very close to Parramatta Road, serviced by many buses, and the closest train station, Stanmore, is a 10 minute walk.

Registration is from 9.30 am with a 10.00 am start, finishing around 4.00 pm. Lunch and other refreshments are provided.

While we frequently present our workshops in Melbourne and Brisbane (and Perth, Darwin, Hobart, Adelaide…!), they are generally on request and are often dependent on a venue being available. If you are interested in workshops in your area, please contact us directly at the studio in Sydney. (link here?)

WHAT OUR WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS SAY

Basic Paper Conservation

Many thanks for yesterday’s workshop. It was wonderful.
I came to work today singing its (and your) praises and am in the middle of writing a report for our staff e-magazine.

It was really worthwhile made better by the hands-on experience and I will be on the lookout for more of your workshops. I would highly recommend this workshop for any library staff member involved in binding and repairs, and anyone dealing with documents needing preservation.”

Rebecca Carter, Librarian, Research Information Service, Fryer Library, The University of Queensland

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the workshop yesterday. It was brilliant. I learnt so much and loved how practical it was!

Susan Mills, Archivist, Sydney Day Nursery Children’s Services

Care of Collections

Thanks for an informative and enjoyable session yesterday. I have blogged about it here.

Jill Ball, Galston, New South Wales, Australia

I just wanted to say thank you for the workshop last week.

I took away a lot of super valuable information which I will be able to use while managing our collection here at the hospital; knowing what is best practice so we can work within our scope to better preserve our significant items.

Timothy Talty, Art Program, Coordinator, Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation

Basic Textile Conservation

I must admit I was quite prepared to be apathetic towards the Costume Conservation Workshop. A treatise on clothing held promise of being both dry and dull, particularly for a male. I couldn’t have been more wrong – this became magnetic, absorbing stimulating. So commenced the report of one of the delegates at the Chapter Workshop to his local committee. …..Our male attendee recorded above (No! He was not the only male attending) crystallised elsewhere in his report what is being reported across the Chapter, “Kay has caused us to reappraise our habitual attitudes towards preparation, treatment and presentation of our costume collection”
