I grew up in Germany with a grandfather and father who were avid collectors and restorers of vintage motorbikes, so I feel I have always had restoration and conservation around me. Some of my earliest memories are of ‘helping’ with the restoration of bikes and attending vintage bike rallies.
In 1993 I moved to the UK to study conservation at Guildhall University. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Conservation and Restoration of Decorative Surfaces I was lucky enough to get an internship at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
This was followed by a few years at the Historic Royal Palaces in London, during which I gained a good understanding of a historic house environment and its day to day running as well as being involved in the set up of exhibitions.
My love for hands-on treatments brought me to working with various interior decorating companies who specialized in paint finishes, faux finishes and gilding – mainly in an effort to better understand the layering and use of different materials.
I started working for Preservation Australia in 2010 and haven’t looked back since! I have been able to learn the art of paper conservation under the guidance of Kay Söderlund, but also have taken on Conservation Resources, the product side of the business.
This allows me to assist our clients, both with advice on appropriate storage as well as the hands on conservation of their significant documents and artworks.
